MICHAEL D. PALM THEATRE

Telluride, Colorado

The 30,000 square foot Palm Theatre is a state of the art, multi-use performing arts facility located on the Telluride Middle-High School Campus. This educational and performance venue is a tribute to the citizens of the Telluride R-1 School District whose vision and commitment exemplify the highest standards of a supportive community. Generations of students, performers and audiences will be inspired by this theater, which is made possible by a citizenry dedicated to excellence in the arts.

The vision for a first-rate performing arts venue in Telluride dates back several decades.  The theater is named for Michael D. Palm through the generosity of the Lucky Star Foundation and the Gluckstern Family.  Together with their friend and business partner, Michael D. Palm, Steven and Judy envisioned a performing arts theater as part of the design for the Telluride Middle-High School that was completed in 1995.  Steven served as the superintendent of the Telluride School District in the early Eighties.Palm-Photo

The stage, wing spaces and proscenium of the Palm Theatre are sized to accommodate the widest possible variety of performances, including dance and road shows. Acoustic considerations defined the height, shape and materials of the house.  A fly space, counterweighted rigging and catwalks house scenery, lighting, and acoustic shell, film speakers and a full size projection screen, all of which can be raised and lowered enabling rapid change over for multiple uses.  An orchestra pit provides space for musical accompaniment for stage productions or can be covered with various configurations of a thrust stage bringing performers closer to the audience.  A large projection / control both provides space for film and digital projectors along with lighting and sound control consoles.

Michael D. Palm was a gifted educator, musician, athlete, business person, and dear friend to all who knew him. Michael, a staunch supporter of civil rights in the gay community, died of complications from AIDS in Telluride in August 1998. It is our hope that all who attend performances at The Michael D. Palm Theatre for the Performing Arts will reflect on Michael's values - intellectual curiosity, a celebration of diversity, and selfless service.

The Palm Theatre opens the door to a new era for the performing arts in the Telluride region.
