Event Details

The Palm Telluride Summer Jazz Series continues in 2019 with three incredible groups that are changing the face of contemporary Jazz. All three performances will be in the intimate Bob Saunders Theatre at the Palm allowing guests an up close and personal experience with the artists. The series begins with the musical visionaries Carisma de Venus who are travelling from the rain forests of Costa Rica to the United States for the first time to share their unique music with Telluride on July 16th.

August 14th brings New Standards fronted by the multi talented composer and bandleader Peter John Stoltzman. Peter has performed at the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall, and venues around the globe, with luminaries such as Bob Moses, Yosvanny Terry, Julian Lage, and Tia Fuller.  Peter and his father, Grammy-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, have been featured on WNYC, Sirius Satellite Radio, NPR, and CBS Sunday Morning. His latest project New Standards features the equally devastating female talent of frequent Trey Anastasio collaborator Natalie Cressman.

Rounding out the Summer Jazz Series is bandleader/composer/percussionist Rudy Royston and his latest project Flatbed Buggy. Rudy Royston, first-call drummer with Bill Frisell, JD Allen, Dave Douglas and a host of other jazz greats, has honed a thoroughly engaging voice as a composer and bandleader. Royston’s new project Flatbed Buggy is rich in tonal contrast and mood yet steeped in the supple, enduring swing and groove that has driven his writing and playing from the start of his career. Royston leads a compact, almost chamber-like quintet featuring Gary Versace (accordion), John Ellis (bass clarinet/saxophones), Hank Roberts (cello) and Joe Martin (bass). Royston started his professional career in Telluride as part of the Telluride Jazz Camp almost 30 years ago.
